CPD Letter to Hillary Clinton
August 10, 2009
Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton
Department of State
2201 C St. NW
Washington, DC 20520
Dear Secretary Clinton,
There are currently negotiations taking place between the United States and Colombia for U.S. access to seven military bases in Colombia. We are writing to state our strong opposition to this step, which will correctly be seen by people throughout Latin America as an attempt to project and legitimize U.S. military power in the region.
The record of U.S. military intervention in Latin America is a long and shameful one. We call on you to end immediately all your efforts to establish United States bases or access to existing bases in the region.
Sincerely,
Joanne Landy and Thomas Harrison
